Does Your Favorite Business Have an AED?

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) can happen to anyone at any time. Are your favorite local businesses prepared?

Does your favorite business have an accessible and highly visible automated external defibrillator (AED) available for public use? If they don’t, it’s not hard to make a case for purchasing one!

We hope you’ll join us in urging your favorite local businesses to invest in a life-saving AED.

Sudden cardiac arrest is caused when a person’s heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. When the heart stops beating, blood and oxygen can’t flow to vital organs. Since SCA is an electrical malfunction, if the victim’s heart isn’t quickly shocked back into a healthy rhythm, death can occur within minutes.

Symptoms of Sudden Cardiac Arrest

  • Sudden loss of consciousness/responsiveness
  • Lack of breathing
  • No pulse

Possible Causes of Sudden Cardiac Arrest

  • Ventricular fibrillation
  • A sudden blow to the chest
  • Electrocution
  • Drowning
  • Drug abuse
  • Heart attacks
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Hypothermia

According to the American Heart Association (AHA) and European Resuscitation Council (ERC), an SCA victim requires defibrillation to stop ventricular fibrillation, an often-fatal heart condition. The only known treatment for sudden cardiac arrest is a shock from a defibrillator, administered as quickly as possible.

Because cardiac arrest can be reversible if it’s treated in the first few minutes with CPR and by using an AED, it’s important for businesses and organizations to make them available to their customers and patrons.

What kind of businesses would benefit from an AED?

Some states require gyms, schools, dentists, and government buildings to have AEDs. Unfortunately, however, AEDs are not required in these locations by all 50 states! And Popular destinations like restaurants, hair salons, and shopping malls may not be required to have an AED on site. Find out what your state has to say about AED legislation and then start reaching out to your favorite local businesses to make sure they’re rescue-ready.
